Valaciclovir is most effective when taken within 24 hours of the start of symptoms. Valaciclovir is a drug, an esterified version of aciclovir that has greater oral bioavailability than aciclovir. It is started within 48 hours of when the rash first appears. It is not known if Valtrex prevents the spread of the herpes virus.
